Nitrogen Tank Blanketing

Nitrogen is utilized for many purposes in the specialty gas industry. Aside from utilization in food and drug preparation, it is used in the maintenance of numerous (typically highly flammable liquid) materials. This method of preventative maintenance is named blanketing in the specialty gases industry.

For most tank containers there is headspace that, left empty, can begin the oxidation process for substances that are prone to this occurrence. To keep these substances in their purest condition during transportation and storage, high purity, dry nitrogen is used to substitute the air that typically inhabits the headspace in these tanks.

To restrain the amount of nitrogen that fills the tank, a valve control system on the tank adjusts nitrogen amounts. The valve regulates to maintain constant positive pressure in the headspace of the tank. While the tank is emptying, there will be a considerable increase of nitrogen to compensate the empty space.
