What is the difference between a single-stage and a dual-stage regulator?

Single-stage regulators lower pressure in one step to produce pressure within a specific range. Regulators devised in this manner will show a small variation in delivery pressure as the cylinder pressure decreases during use. For this reason, single-stage regulators are most appropriate for jobs where a constant outlet pressure is not critical, where an operator can watch and readjust pressure, or where inlet pressure is steady.

Dual-stage regulators have the same function as single-stage regulators. However, delivery pressure holds constant as cylinder pressure declines. Greater accuracy in pressure control is sustained because the pressure reduction is performed in two steps. Dual-stage regulators are suggested for applications requiring a constant outlet pressure over the life of a gas cylinder.
