Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) is an atmospheric contaminant that results when fossils fuels come in contact with excess oxygen and ignite; at flame-inducing temperatures, the oxygen not ignited with the fuel reacts with the nitrogen from the air to produce nitric oxide (NO) and, in the presence of more oxygen and heat, is further oxidized to NO₂. For commercial application, Nitrogen Dioxide is produced in the oxidation of ammonia at well-moderated temperatures in a steam-rich environment.

Nitrogen Dioxide’s most frequent use is in rocket motors, more accurately in its dimerized state as N₂O₄ (Nitrogen Tetroxide, NOM 4). In this form, it is reacted with hydrazine to provide propulsion. These liquefied gases may be stored for exceptionally long periods in space given that they’re not cryogenic fluids and thus pose no threat of excessive venting from boil-off. They are used in positioning motors in orbiting satellites that may need repositioning at some future date. NO₂ is also useful as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and in special applications as a sterilizing atmosphere.

In specialty gas applications, NO₂ is frequently a factor in calibration gases for environmental emission and industrial hygiene oversight.
