Nitrous Oxide Supplier

A colorless, sweet-tasting, oxidizing gas, Nitrous Oxide (N2O) fulfills a number of beneficial needs and Arc3 Gases offers PurityPlus® N2O – the most trusted brand available.

Nitrous Oxide was originally synthesized in 1772 by Joseph Priestly, who dripped nitric acid on iron filings. That may seem about as simple a process as one could devise, but a still simpler technique for achieving greater amounts of N2O was perfected under the supervision of Humphry Davy before the turn of the 18th century. It essentially introduces attentively regulated heat to ammonium nitrate, which effects its decomposition into Nitrous Oxide and water. Most N₂O production makes use of this methodology, either directly or by a similar procedure that employs urea and a blending of sulfuric and nitric acids.

Nitrous Oxide is used as an anesthetic, as a leak-detection gas, and as an oxidizing agent. It is used also as a propellant in aerosol cans for the pharmaceutical and food-and-beverage industries, most commonly in commercial whipped-cream dispensers.

N₂O finds further use as a specialty oxidizing flame-support gas in atomic absorption (AA) instrumentation for metal analysis. When blended with particular perfluorinated hydrocarbons, it is used as a propellant/oxidizer in select special-application rocket guidance systems. And, in extremely high purity (99.995+%), Nitrous Oxide is used with some frequency in semiconductor manufacture.
